Cisco Systems unveils video conferencing system

(Tele.com Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) A high-definition video conferencing system has been unveiled by Cisco Systems Inc, a network equipment manufacturer, with demand expected from international companies with offices in locations such as Shanghai and Bangalore.

The TelePresence product will be available in two versions to begin with, from December, including the basic TelePresence 1000 model which is priced at USD79,000 per station and is intended for one-to-one meetings.

The TelePresence 3000, which is installed in the form of a small conference room and incorporates three high-definition screens, is intended for larger meetings and is priced at USD299,000 per station.

Cisco Systems said the TelePresence screens, alongside speakers and cameras, help users feel as though they are in the same room, which it hopes will attract companies which have previously not used video conferencing.

Cisco Systems hopes the new system, which is expected to compete with Hewlett-Packard Co's Halo Collaboration Studio, will be profitable in two to three years, growing into a billion dollar business within five to seven years. It is expecting to diversify the system in the future, providing for other areas such as banks, retailers and hospitals.
