Fujitsu Unveils WiMAX Strategy Encompassing Silicon, Systems and Services

BOSTON --(Business Wire)-- Fujitsu Network Communications and Fujitsu Microelectronics America, Inc. today articulated a comprehensive WiMAX strategic vision that includes development of every major component in the WiMAX network, including silicon solutions, electronic devices, radio access network solutions, professional services and backhaul infrastructure solutions. Backed by the Fujitsu global presence and leadership in the development of next generation networks, the Fujitsu WiMAX solution will allow carriers to work with one strategic partner for broadband wireless networks, helping them offer the leading-edge services consumers are demanding for anytime, anywhere voice, video and data communications.

The new Fujitsu WiMAX product line includes two models of base stations for indoor or outdoor use. These base stations include a very compact Radio Frequency (RF) unit with world-class high-efficiency RF amplifiers and a high-performance, compact Baseband (BB) unit. The system is based on the ratified IEEE 802.16-2005 standard and the WiMAX Forum(TM) definition of mobile WiMAX. By integrating industry-leading intellectual property for multiple antenna technologies such as multiple-input/multiple-output (MIMO) into these new systems and leveraging its world leading Digital Pre-Distortion (DPD) amplifiers, Fujitsu is providing the highest performance, comprehensive WiMAX solution that easily scales to meet the demands of the rapidly expanding broadband wireless access market.

"Our standards-based end-to-end WiMAX solution provides superior performance and flexibility for fixed and mobile services, with high bandwidth and a wide coverage area," said Eisuke Iwabuchi, president of the mobile system business unit of Fujitsu Limited. "A key advantage of our solution is that it allows for easy installation and cost-effective network design, while providing high-speed connections for users and tight integration with all IP networks."

Fujitsu is a leader in WiMAX silicon solutions and has been from the beginning of the WiMAX Forum. Its System on a Chip (SoC) solution is designed to optimize both performance and power consumption using state-of-the-art proprietary 90 nm process technology that is ideal for PC cards and mobile device applications such as high-speed vehicular data sharing, consumer-in-motion and mobile appliance connectivity. As highly-integrated, small form-factor silicon solutions become available at the right combination of price, weight, performance and battery life, Fujitsu will continue to provide competitive SoC solutions which are optimized for innovative and attractive handsets for the mobile broadband era.

The Fujitsu fixed WiMAX SoC was an integral part of the first base station to be WiMAX certified in January of 2006. In June of 2006, Fujitsu announced its roadmap for delivery of WiMAX mobility silicon solutions, and in September 2006, Hopling Technologies announced its plan to partner with Fujitsu to bring Linux-based WiMAX reference boards to market.

"As one of the founding board members of the WiMAX Forum, Fujitsu has contributed greatly to the development and standardization of WiMAX," said Ray Abrishami, senior director, wireless products group, Fujitsu Microelectronics America. "Fujitsu will continue to lead the definition of this exciting new technology via our contributions to the WiMAX Forum, by developing innovative wireless systems, and working closely with our customers."

"By building on our global expertise and strength in the 3G and WCDMA marketplace, we're able to deliver the most comprehensive WiMAX solution to date, with products that span the development life cycle from silicon to complete systems," said Jim Hintze, senior vice president of marketing at Fujitsu Network Communications. "In addition, we offer a complete set of professional services to assist with every phase of a wireless network from planning to deployment to maintenance so a carrier can concentrate on other areas of their business. We offer carriers a one-stop shop that can address all wireless needs from small fixed deployments to full-scale national and global networks."

Fujitsu Network Life Cycle Services are an integral part of the network solution. These services are available to help carriers create and extend their WiMAX footprint by utilizing planning services such as RF engineering, site acquisition and site preparation. When carriers are ready to build their network, Fujitsu offers a full line of deployment services, which include installation and test/turn-up services, as well as backhaul and back-office connectivity provisioning. Carriers can also opt to have Fujitsu monitor and maintain their wireless network with Network Operations Center (NOC) services and provide network statistics so carriers maintain full visibility to the inner workings of their network. Full maintenance and support is also available 24x7, with rapid deployment of on-site technical assistance personnel and spares management as needed.

Fujitsu has formed key regional partnerships to augment development efforts and meet specific requirements of carriers around the world. In North America, for example, Fujitsu has partnered with two broadband wireless access leaders - Airspan Networks (NASDAQ:AIRN) for WiMAX solutions and BelAir Networks for Wi-Fi mesh solutions.

The new end-to-end WiMAX solution will be on display this week at the WiMAX World Conference and Exhibition in Boston in Fujitsu booth No. 317.
