Pres Breaks Ground On HQ

Jan 25, 2013 (Albuquerque Journal - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Presbyterian Healthcare Services said Thursday it has broken ground on a new office building on what will become a 38-acre administrative headquarters on the site of a former call center at 9521 San Mateo NE that it bought two years ago.

T he new t h r e e -- stor y, 195,000-square-foot building, near Balloon Fiesta Park, will supplement space in the existing 133,090-square-foot former Citi call center, providing a total of 318,000 square feet for the headquarters. The campus, to be called the Cooper Administration Center, will house about 2,100 employers.

The entire project -- new building and renovation of the existing one -- will cost $32 million. The project will provide jobs for 200 to 300 construction workers, with about 50 on the job site at any given time.

Presbyterian purchased the property for about $9.9 million in September 2011.

The company's central administration staff is currently housed in leased space in an office park near Albuquerque International Sunport. The lease expires in June 2014, thus giving the healthcare provider a year and a half to make the move to the former Citicorp site.

The shift from leasing its office space to owning it is a financial move to lower overhead costs over time, Presbyterian says in a description of the Cooper Center project provided to the Journal . "The new building will help us keep our costs down for our patients and members and allow us to reinvest those savings back into the communities we serve," it says.

General contractor for the project is Enterprise Builders, while the architect is Dekker Perich Sabatini and the engineer is Bridgers & Paxton Consulting Engineers. All are Albuquerque-based businesses.
