Want to Put Podcasts on Your Cellphone?

Do you want to hop on the ‘podcasting’ bandwagon but don’t want to invest in an iPod?  That’s not too surprising given the fact that the number of iPod users totals about 15 million compared with, say, the hundreds of thousands that carry a 3G cellular phone.

Podcasting is the technique of automatically delivering .mp3 audio files onto your iPod using RSS technology. Now, a Los Angeles-based company called Pod2Mob has released free software, which it claims is first to come to market, enables consumers to listen to their favorite podcasts on their mobile handsets.

“Pod2Mob turns every mobile phone into an iPod,” said Brad Zutaut, co-founder.  “Until now, Podcasting has been a fun, new medium with a limited audience, but Pod2Mob has just expanded that audience beyond the elite to the mainstream.”

According to Gartner Research, sales of mobile phones are set to reach one billion annually by 2009 while iPod sales are expected to reach 60 million by 2010.

The software can be found on the company’s Web site. According to the site, the current release is currently in the beta-testing stage and has been tested on the SprintPCS and Cingular networks. The Pod2Mob application downloads updated podcasts on the go and streams them to an applet on the users mobile phone. Content can be refreshed as often as desired, but usually once a day since most podcasts are produced daily.

Many radio stations have eagerly jumped on the podcasting bandwagon in order to extend their distribution through the easy-to-sponsor medium. In addition, podcasting attracts a younger, more affluent demographic.
