NordicNeuroLab Chooses eMagin OLED Microdisplays for fMRI Application

BELLEVUE, Wash. --(Business Wire)-- Feb. 15, 2006 -- eMagin Corporation (AMEX:EMA), a leader in personal display systems and technologies, is supplying SVGA 3D OLED microdisplays for NordicNeuroLab's new VisualSystem. The VisualSystem product provides true 3D visual stimuli for fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging) applications.

fMRI, based on the discovery that magnetic resonance imaging can be used to map changes in brain fluid flow and chemical changes that correspond to human brain function, is becoming the diagnostic method of choice for learning how a normal, diseased, or injured brain is working, as well as for assessing the potential risks of surgery. Future applications include the mapping of pain areas in the brain. According to an analysis by Alta Biomedical Group LLC for the Washington Technology Center, over 18 million MRI procedures are performed annually in the US.

According to Dr. Tormod Thomsen, Managing Director, NordicNeuroLabs, "Studies show that visual stimulation for fMRI measurements are more reliable with direct input through video goggles than with the conventional use of projection screens. eMagin's OLED microdisplays provide the contrast, color, and 3D capability to deliver the convincing visual stimuli required."

Designed with both the patient and operator in mind, NordicNeuroLab's new VisualSystem can be mounted easily on top of most modern head coils. Its adjustable arm allows fast positioning of the microdisplays into the preferred angle of view, and differences in pupil distance and dioptric correction are also easily adjustable. The VisualSystem features a unique optical setup to enlarge images generated by small, precision image OLED displays, and projects images to the patient's eyes without use of fiber cables and risk of dead or grey pixels.

"Readily accessible 3D imagery has proven to be highly useful for several fast growing medical applications," noted Susan Jones, chief marketing and strategy officer, eMagin Corporation. "What NordicNeuroLabs has accomplished with their VisualSystem demonstrates the kind of creativity that's making medical instruments more accurate, effective and flexible."
