--(Business Wire)--

Kaplan University:

WHAT:

Kaplan University kicks off its ninth Kaplan University Speakers Series webinar with Col. Susan Luz, a registered nurse, decorated soldier and author of The Nightingale of Mosul (Kaplan Publishing, April 2010). As a top-ranking nurse in the army reserve, Col. Luz was deployed to Iraq at age 56. She was awarded the Bronze Star in 2007 for meritorious service in the care of wounded soldiers, contractors, Iraqi civilians and detainees. In the interactive webinar titled "One Nurse's Journey: A conversation with Susan Luz," Col. Luz will discuss her experiences transitioning from civilian to military life, working as a public health nurse, becoming a combat nurse and receiving the Bronze Star.

WHO:

Col. Luz is the highest ranking soldier in the 399th Combat Support Hospital, an army reserve unit based out of Massachusetts. Trained as a nurse, she has lived a life devoted to public service and has worked in inner-city schools, jails and adolescent psychiatric wards. A former Peace Corps volunteer in Brazil, she holds a nursing degree from the University of Rhode Island and a master's degree in public health from Boston University. No stranger to military circles, her father is a World War II veteran who served under General Patton (News - Alert). Her father-in-law is the late George Luz Sr., who was portrayed by actor Rick Gomez in the Band of Brothers HBO miniseries based on Stephen Ambrose's bestselling book by the same name.

The webinar, which is free and open to the public, will be moderated by Sheila Burke, dean of the Kaplan Higher Education School of Nursing.
