Avaya to buy SIP software developer

(InfoWorld Daily Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) In a move to beef up its Internet networking expertise, communications vendor Avayahas agreed to acquire Ubiquity Software, a developer of software applications using SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) technology.

The deal, worth 74.3 million ($144 million ), will help Avaya provide support to network operators and enterprises migrating to all-IP (Internet Protocol) networks, the company said Friday.

Avaya designs, builds and manages communications networks for more than 1 million companies worldwide.

Ubiquity develops SIP-based communications software to service providers, ISVs (independent software vendors) and OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) around the world.

SIP technology, for instance, lets traditional or mobile phones work together more readily with applications such as e-mail and instant messaging.
