Alion Announces The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Light The Night Walk Will be the Kick-off Event for Alion Cares

MCLEAN, Va. --(Business Wire)-- Alion Science and Technology, an employee-owned technology solutions company, today announced that the The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's "Light The Night" walk will be the inaugural event for Alion Cares, a new program created in Alion to promote employee and corporate involvement in the community.

"Alion employees have been very involved in community and charitable organizations, and the company itself regularly donates to charities and encourages employee volunteer work. Over the last year, we decided this was such an important part of the Alion culture that it was time to formalize a corporate giving program," commented Patricia Weaver, Alion's Senior Vice President and Director Corporate Administration. "We're incredibly excited to launch Alion Cares, and our participation as a national team at the Light The Night event is such a great way to get things started."

Light The Night is a series of nationwide evening walks held in September and October to celebrate and commemorate the lives touched by cancer and to raise money in support of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's mission to cure blood cancers. Roughly 200,000 people participate in the events throughout the United States and Canada.

Alion is supporting the event by providing teams of walkers as well as financial support for walk sites in cities where Alion has offices. These sites span multiple states, including Alabama, California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, North Carolina, New Mexico, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas and Virginia.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is the world's largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research, education and patient services. The society's mission is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and to improve the quality of life of patients and their families.

"The Light The Night walks will allow Alion employees to participate across the nation in their own communities, helping support important research through the simple act of walking," continued Weaver. "Approximately 786,000 Americans live with blood cancers, and leukemia is the leading cause of cancer deaths in children under the age of 20. Our employees feel passionately about this cause, and we look forward to showing up in full force to support this important event."

In addition to the Light The Night event, Alion Cares will sponsor additional events and charities throughout the country, focusing on four primary areas for its giving and volunteer efforts, specifically:

-- Armed Services - These organizations support the American soldier, their families and missions. Examples include Helping our Heroes Foundation and the Marine Corps Toys For Tots.

-- Science and Technology - These programs promote science and technology within schools and communities. Some of the programs Alion has supported include: Alion Science Grant Program; FIRST Robotics Competition; Anne Arundel County (MD) Regional Science and Engineering Fair Annapolis (MD); Boys and Girls Club; and the Alion Dependent Children Scholarship Fund.

In the past Alion has proudly supported the following organizations: St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital; INOVA Fairfax (VA) Hospital for Children; American Red Cross; Cystic Fibrosis Foundation; Easter Seals; The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society; and the National Alliance for Autism Research.

-- Community Outreach - Alion participates in and supports programs that foster community and personal development. Programs Alion has sponsored in the past include: Boy Scouts of America; CrisisLink; Fairfax (VA) and Sumter (SC) Chambers of Commerce; and Leadership Fairfax (VA).
