Rupert Murdoch Takes to Twitter

By Michelle Amodio, TMCnet Contributor

Rupert Murdoch has apparently taken to Twitter (News - Alert) and is doing what the rest of everyone else on Twitter does: tweeting his opinions on everything. Well, mostly everything.

The media entrepreneur signed up for Twitter on Saturday night and, by Monday, he managed to unleash over 20 tweets and had 74,000 followers. That’s not bad for a new guy in the micro blogosphere.

Murdoch’s Twitter account mostly dealt with tweets of the political nature. Included in his 140-character or less missives were praises for Rick Santorum, the Republican presidential hopeful and a few opinions on the Steve Jobs (News - Alert) biography. You know, stuff the rest of the free Twitter world posts about. Politics and other stuff.

According to Reuters, Murdoch called Obama's decision on the detention of terrorism suspects "very courageous - and dead right!"

Soon after Murdoch joined Twitter, his wife followed suit and also created a Twitter account for herself. Rather, it seems as if she did so, but really, it was all a rouse.

The creator of a Twitter feed under Wendi Deng’s name revealed Tuesday that the account actually had nothing to do with Deng.

“Hello Twitter. As News International has finally come to their senses, it’s time to confirm that yes, this is a fake account. I’m not Wendi,” the person behind the spoof account (@Wendi_Deng) wrote. News International, the news conglomerate controlled by Murdoch, had earlier refused to confirm or deny whether the account was actually Deng’s.

The Deng impersonator claimed they weren’t trying to fool Twitter’s verification process, yet somehow they managed to get a verified approval from the microblogging site.

“I was as surprised – and even a little alarmed – when I saw the Verified tick appear on the profile,” they tweeted, adding that the checkmark appeared almost out of the blue.

“You have to wonder even more why Twitter verified this account for a full day. I never received any communication from them about this,” the impersonator wrote.
