LG's 84-inch TV to Debut at CES

By Michelle Amodio, TMCnet Contributor

Those of you who think your 56-inch LCD television sets are a marvel to wonder about (yours truly included) are going to be disappointed to know that there is a much bigger, much clearer TV out there.

It’s not quite like buying a movie theater, but it’s close. LG promises to show off its 84-inch 3-D television that promises to deliver “ultra definition,” which is 3840×2160, which is four times the size of the usual Full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels.

LG has opted for passive, rather than active 4D, which has the advantage of using lightweight glasses without integrated electronics that are more comfortable to wear and cheaper to make.

LG’s 84-inch set includes some interesting 3D features. One they are calling 3D sound, which it seems is just a fancy name for manipulation of stereo so that the sounds appear to be coming from different locations.

Another feature is called 3D Depth Control, which lets the viewer control the 3D experience on the TV, likely by changing how strong the 3D effect is.

LG will include the Smart TV ecosystem, which comprises of over 1,200 apps and gives users access to a growing range of premium content services such as the 3D Zone where viewers can select from a wealth of 3D movies.

One of the slicker features is a Magic Remote navigation system, offering a built-in mic that recognizes the users' voice and carries out basic verbal commands. Kind of like having Siri for your TV.

The Magic Remote also offers users a choice of command input, including Voice Recognition, Wheel, Point and Magic Gesture, which reacts to basic hand gestures, which, if we’re going with comparisons here, it’s like a Kinect for your TV.

Overall, it seems as if this mega-TV set is taking the best technologies in popular gadgets and adding them to one colossal set, making this a coveted item for any home theater aficionado, or anyone who wants a TV the size of their wall.

No word on price or availability yet, but it’s probably safe to assume the price tag (News - Alert) will be a hefty one.
