Research In Motion Accused of Lying

By Monica Gleberman, Contributing Writer

Research In Motion (RIM), which creates and manufactures the BlackBerry (News - Alert) wireless handheld device, was accused of lying about the reason that the company is delaying the release of its next-generation Blackberry 10 operating system until late next year. Tech blog Boy Genius (News - Alert) (BGR) said the company has been lying to consumers for a while.

BGR posted a blog saying, “Our source has communicated to us in no certain terms that the PlayBook 2.0 OS developers have been testing a crystal clear window into the current state of BlackBerry 10 on smartphones. No email, no BlackBerry Messenger – it’s almost identical.,” said BRG.

BGR said their contact told them the email and PIM is better on an 8700 than it is on BlackBerry 10 saying that RIM has failed to make the company’s new OS work with the network infrastructure RIM is known for.

RIM claimed they were waiting on a LTE (News - Alert) chipset before the phones would be able to be released. BGR says that is not true. “Our source told us that Mike Lazaridis (founder and co-CEO of RIM) was lying when he said the company’s new lineup was delayed for that reason. RIM is simply pushing this out as long as they can for one reason, they don’t have a working product yet,” said BGR.

RIM has denied these allegations in a statement saying that BGR has received incorrect information. “[We] made a strategic decision to launch BlackBerry 10 with a new, LTE-based dual-core chipset architecture,” and “the anonymous claim suggesting otherwise is inaccurate and uninformed.”

Earlier this year, RIM promised to release a new version of the OS running the Playbook that would incorporate email and some other consumer wanted functions, then pushed back the release of that upgrade (which was revealed to be BlackBerry 10) until next year.

There have been a number of rumors floating around that the struggling company could be possible purchased by a big online retailer like Amazon or Microsoft (News - Alert).

Right now, RIM is just sticking to their statement that BGR’s accusations are meritless. “As Mike Lazaridis previously reiterated on the earnings call, we will not launch BlackBerry 10 devices until we know they are ready…any suggestion to the contrary is simply false. We appreciate the interest in our future platform and we will continue to work hard to deliver that platform as soon as possible,” RIM said in a statement.
