Netflix and Lionsgate UK Set Stage for European Launch

By Oliver VanDervoort, Contributing Writer

While Netflix has made a number of missteps in 2011, the company looks to be righting its ship as we head towards the end of the year. Over the summer, Netflix made quite a few of their customers angry by not only raising rates, but then issuing a bit of a non-apology- apology. Netflix actually saw enough customers complain about their splitting of the company that they later decided not to.

While Netflix was alienating some of their most loyal customers, they were also still cutting some deals that would mean others would certainly stay on board. Signing new contracts with various license holders has allowed the streaming video company to add some really great titles to their library.

In September, Netflix inked an exclusive deal with Dreamworks. Now the company has come to agreement with Lionsgate UK. This particular deal looks to be pretty important to the company as they begin launching their service on the other side of the pond.

The announcement details out a multi-year agreement between Netflix and Lionsgate UK that will allow Netflix to stream some of the better older movies the studio owns, as well as some of the best new ones yet to come. This particular deal is a big lynch pin for Netflix's plans in European countries such as Great Britain and Ireland.

The company expects to launch their streaming service in those countries in “early 2012.” This particular contract will allow British and Irish customers to watch a ton of Lionsgate movies on their television, computer, tablets, or smarpthones. Netflix's expansion into Europe was long rumored until the company finally officially announced in October.

The company will face some competition for its services with the movie rental service Lovefilm, one of the reasons the Lionsgate UK contract was so important to Netflix.

Among the movies that customers in Europe will be able to see are some of the best of the older generation like Reservoir Dogs and the Blair Witch Project. Those same customers will also get to see newer movies like Hunger Games and the Expendables 2 as well as many more.
