T-Mobile Expands Tablet Portfolio with New Addition from Samsung

By Ashok Bindra, TMCnet Contributor

Technology news and information site Newsfactor.com reported on Thursday that the wireless carrier T-Mobile (News - Alert) USA will begin selling Samsung's new Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus tablet in its stores nationwide beginning next week.

According to this report, Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus is powered by Google Android (News - Alert) 3.2 operating system, which is also known as Honeycomb. It weighs 0.77 pounds, runs on a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor. And offers a USB 2.0 port with a choice of 16 GB or 32 GB memory for storage, and a front-facing 2-megapixel (MP) camera and a back-facing 3 MP camera

Newsfactor.com’s reporter Mark Long wrote, “Through the addition of Samsung's (News - Alert) updated 7-inch model, T-Mobile will be able to offer customers an entire portfolio of tablets with 7-inch, 9-inch, and 10-inch multi-touch displays.”

The report quoted T-Mobile vice president Jeremy Korst, as saying, “Consumers want a selection of affordable, highly mobile tablets that can deliver the content they want virtually anywhere they go.”

Initially, as reported, the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus will be offered with a post-rebate price of $250 when it debuts nationwide on November 16. However, wrote Long, “buyers with approved credit will also have to pay $10 per month on an interest-free basis for an additional 20 months to complete their purchase.”

While many new tablet options are emerging in the market, T-Mobile is confident that many of its subscribers will go for the Samsung tablet because of its high-speed packet access (HSPA) plus connectivity, Long wrote.

Because HSPA+ is about three times faster than a conventional HSPA connection, T-Mobile said that HSPA+ will give T-Mobile's tablet users the desired speed for downloading multimedia files, as well as meeting the fast anywhere/anytime connection for business professional on the go.

In addition to HSPA+, Samsung’s new tablet also offers Bluetooth 3.0 and Wi-Fi connectivity.

Also available is the Wi-Fi Direct, which enables Wi-Fi devices to communicate with each other without the need for a wireless access point or hot spot. “What's more, the Samsung tablet offers voice and video call support without requiring the use of a headset,” wrote Long.

According to Newsfactor.com, T-Mobile is offering three data plans for the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus and other media tables that are priced at $40 (2 GB), $50 (5 GB) and $80 (10 GB) per month and require a two-year service commitment.
