PRIVATE WiFi Runs Facebook Contest Geared Towards Users Protecting Their Data

By Oliver VanDervoort, Contributing Writer

There is very little doubt that more and more people are using social networking sites to talk with their friends and let the world know what they are up to. While fun and frolicking can be had using sites like Facebook and Twitter (News - Alert), there are also some dangers to using these sites.

Those who would like nothing more than to steal your identity are always working overtime finding new ways to wedge themselves into your life. That is why PRIVTE WiFi (News - Alert) is using Facebook to illustrate just how important it is to safeguard your identity, but doing it in a fun way.

PRIVATE WiFi is running a contest through their Facebook (News - Alert) page that they are calling “Hide Your Face on Facebook” which will be running through the entire month of October. Some of you may know that October is actually billed as National Cyber Security Month, so this content really is timely. This particular contest has asked users to go to the PRIVATE Facebook page and post pictures of themselves somehow covering their faces.

Of course these pictures aren’t supposed to be the usual hiding your face with your hands, but rather finding neat, innovative ways to obscure your identity. When someone uploads one of these pictures, they must make sure to tag (News - Alert) PRIVATE WiFi so that the pictures appear on the company wall. PRIVATE will dedicate an entire photo album to the photos they receive and at the end of every week will pick one lucky user, who will win a year’s subscription to the the company’s security service. One grand prize winner will get themselves a free iPad 2 for their troubles.

PRIVATE WiFi’s CEO, Kent Lawson explained why his company is running this contest now. “Each day, more and more people are realizing how important it is to protect their online identities. Our software does this, and we are committed to educating as many people about protecting from online security risks as we can through contests like this one.”

PRIVATE WiFi’s software protects WiFi users the same way bigger companies protect their employees. Most large companies employ a Virtual Private Network (VPN) that encrypts WiFi data. PRIVATE WiFi offers the ability to encrypt your home WLAN in the same manner.
