Facebook Implements News Feed on User Pages

By Oliver VanDervoort, Contributing Writer

Facebook (News - Alert) has claimed that this time of year is “launching season” and they are certainly living up to that motto. The social media giant has been launching little tweaks all month that have been centered quite a bit on what users can read and today’s tweak is right in line with that.

Facebook has now added the News Feed to users’ home pages. In the last 10 days, Facebook has launched a ton of different services that are all geared towards making the site take on a decidedly different look and feel.

While the site has not gone, major cosmetic changes the little changes combined do make the site a different animal. The site recently added the ability to actually follow other Facebook users who are not their friends much like someone can do on Twitter (News - Alert). There is also the ability to put your friends into Smart Lists that will better allow you to get your messages and pictures to specific groups of people. Instead of having to put your friends in groups, the site will do it automatically depending on where they went to school, live, or work.

The News Feed is designed to put postings that are more important by their friends or those they are following at the top of the page. Of course, at the start of this feature, there are going to be some problems, as the site seems to be arbitrarily deciding what is most important. Luckily, there is a settings feature that will allow you to set just how important one person’s posts are compared to another.

In addition, the top right corner of the Facebook page now has a running list of different updates by your friends that are less important, such as adding pictures or gaining a new friend. Facebook product manager Keith Schacht told the media on Wednesday that this particular feature is not a reaction to Google (News - Alert)+, but rather the company has been planning for quite some time.

"Last week we announced (Smart) List and Subscribe, which were about more control of what members see in the News Feed," Schacht said. "Today, these changes are about letting people see the most important news."
