magicJack CBO Tribolet Explores 'Revoice' Revolution

By Carrie Schmelkin, TMCnet Web Editor

In addition to the explosion of cloud, 4G and innovative services like FoIP, another revolution is currently underway – that of voice.

“We have come a long way, we continue to have a long way to go, but overtime this revolution of voice is happening – which is what I call revoice,” Michael Tribolet, chief business officer at magicJack VocalTec (News - Alert), said during the kick-off keynote address at IEXPO West 2011. “As an industry, we have come from copper wires to fiber wires, fiber wires to wireless, from dial up to broadband and from ether to the net. Now is the time to take advantage of all these things and create these types of solutions that everyone can enjoy.”

Attendees from all over the world packed into the exhibit hall this morning to hear Tribolet talk about the “revoice revolution” and how magicJack is keeping up with emerging trends. magicJack VocalTec, the inventor of VoIP including the softphone and magicJack,  aims to become the leading international provider of global voice over many platform, according to company officials.

The company has sold more than 8 million of the award-winning magicJack since the device's launch in 2008, and has the use of over 30 patents, some dating to when VocalTec invented VoIP.

During his keynote, Tribolet highlighted where magicJack and the VoIP industry is headed.

In the past few years, the industry has seen the rise of dial pads, which Tribolet likened to “flying a F15 with my hair on fire;” the switch from closed clouds to cloud computing, or open clouds; the shift from “MPLS to the wild, wild west” of letting calls fly through the Internet; and the rise of effective e911 (News - Alert).

“We are still in the midst of an identity crisis here in VoIP,” Tribolet said. “You take a look at where we are at and you ask is it SIP trunking, social media? It’s Facebook (News - Alert) and Twitter today, but who knows what it is going to be tomorrow. And the cloud – what does cloud really mean? Is it defining the industry or are we as an industry defining how cloud will work?”

The industry has also seen the rise of apps and is currently being dominated by apps, according to Tribolet. Love it or hate it, Tribolet said, apps such as Skype (News - Alert) continue to dominate the space as they give consumers the unique ability to save money and also enjoy solution.

As the explosion of VoIP continues, it is largely being driven by two drivers: carriers and entrepreneurs.
