Android Strengthens Hold on First Place in Smartphone Marketshare

By Oliver VanDervoort, Contributing Writer

While many people think that the iPhone is the undisputed king of the smartphone market, it is actually Google’s Android (News - Alert) platform phones which continue to reign. A new report continues to show that while consumers love Apple and the iPhone Android’s wide variety of phones has kept them holding the largest market share.

Of course, because Android is actually releasing several different phones, such as the Optimus line produced by several different companies, some would say they have an unfair advantage. It also helps that Android is the first smartphone line that has actually managed to offer a 3-D phone. All of these advantages have added up to Android now holding 41.8 percent of the smartphone market. According to industry analysts comScore, that is actually a 5.4 percent up tick from May to July of this year.

Apple (News - Alert) comes in second in the market share race with 27 percent which is a 1 percent growth over the same time period. After the top two, there isn’t much of a race between third and last. RIM, which was once considered one of the top smartphone platforms in the world, continues to fade with just 21.7 percent of the market. That is a 4 percent drop from the same period in which Apple and Google were picking up steam.

Coming in a very distant fourth place is the Microsoft Windows 7 phones, which is still trying to find its footing. The Windows 7 phone fell from 6.7 percent to 5.7 percent of the market and Symbian has almost completely fallen off the map, holding just 1.9 percent. While Google and Apple don’t appear to be catch able, there are those who feel that when Nokia (News - Alert) finally starts launching its own line of Windows phones Microsoft will be able to make a run at Blackberry.

As far as smartphone manufacturers, Samsung (News - Alert) takes the top spot with 25.5 percent of the market. Trailing closely behind is LG with 20.9 percent. Motorola brings up third place with 14.1 percent and Apple actually comes in a distant fourth with just 9 percent of the market.
