Advanced Technologies for Developing New Wellness Products

Technology impacts every industry today, including the CBD industry, from hemp farming to CBD product retailing. Technology is streamlining hemp cultivation, improving the therapeutic value of government-approved CBD to treat seizures, and adapting 3D printing to increase the oral solubility of CBD capsules and pills. These are just a few ways technology is transforming the CBD industry. It grows more sophisticated each year, and technology plays a supportive and creative role. You can check out CBD.market to learn about new technologies and updates to stay informed and ahead of the curve.

CBD Industry Transforming Technologies

Following are six technology advances and research projects in the CBD industry news.

1. 3D Printed CBD Tablets

Swedish and Greek researchers developed an algorithm to print CBD pills with precise CBD dose amounts using a home 3D printer. You input your weight and other information into the algorithm, producing a 3D file. The file is fed to the printer. The development of a specialized orodisperable filament that contains CBD and rapidly dissolves in the mouth makes this possible.

2. Drones Increase Ability to Manage Large Hemp Farms

Drones are changing the hemp farming industry. As hemp farms grow larger to meet the rapid growth of the CBD market, drones are used to monitor crops and gather data. Quantitative analytics enable farmers to size plants, monitor plant maturity and identify replanting opportunities. The drones can also help farmers recognize plant stress and disease earlier. Since female hemp plants produce better CBD products, the drones are also used to manage the male-female plant ratio.

3. New CBD Therapeutic for Treating Seizures in Clinical Trial

Puretech, a life sciences company, announced LYT-310 in November 2022, a new CBD-based therapeutic product for preventing seizures. The therapeutic CBD product leverages the company’s lymphatic targeting Glyph platform, which can link a drug to a fat module and create a novel prodrug that increases absorption. The LYT-310 is in clinical trials, and as of December 2033, preclinical trial data showed it has strong anti-seizure protection ability.

4. Genetic Engineering of Cannabis

Biotechnology advances include the utilization of CRISPR to produce high-quality cannabis plant cultivars. Genetic engineering increases pest and microbial resistance but is also being developed to produce cannabis plants with little or no THC and higher amounts of CBD, minor cannabinoids and terpenes.

5. Blockchain Technology

The integration of advanced technologies into the cannabis industry is accelerating. Blockchain technology is increasingly used to trace products from the field to the final selling point. This enables a company to document the truth of its claims about transparency and product characteristics like origin and authenticity of production quality steps. Blockchain-based software helps companies prove compliance with legal and regulatory requirements. The future will likely hold the utilization of generative artificial intelligence for modeling growing conditions, crop yields, potencies of CBD products and new CBD strains.

6. Microwave-Assisted Reactor

A project is in process to decarboxylate the acidic forms of phytocannabinoids in the cannabis plant with a prototype of a microwave reactor designed explicitly for the CBD process. The focus is on energy and time savings and achieving the entourage effect

Even More Technology to Come

The six applications of state-of-the-art technologies in the CBD industry are not the only ones. Researchers are working to enhance nanoemulsion technology, which creates water-soluble CBD products with enhanced bioavailability. They are also striving to improve microencapsulation which involves encapsulating CBD oil droplets within a protective shell, which can enhance stability, prolong shelf life, and mask undesirable tastes or odors, improving the overall consumer experience.

What Does the Future Hold?

There is much research into potential improvements to CBD farming and processing now. Should the U.S. establish oversight of the CBD industry, the research into new CBD technologies will certainly accelerate because it will give farmers, producers and consumers more certainty about CBD processing and product manufacturing.
