Ways You Can Use Your Local Newspaper to Market Your Brand

Despite the challenges they face from the proliferation of digital media, local newspapers continue to serve an essential role in the lives of the people they cover. While the high cost of advertising in major metropolitan dailies may be out of reach for a small business, entrepreneurs have a wide variety of options for promoting their companies in local media, ranging from free community weeklies to enormous dailies. With that said, here's how you can utilize print media to your advantage

Editorial Independence

Large cities have a wide readership, but they are also quite expensive places to advertise. Your community likely has a weekly newspaper whose rates are much more reasonable than daily. Numerous such publications have appeared in recent decades, gaining a committed readership in communities ranging from rural areas to major metropolitan hubs. Because of their compact size, adverts in these periodicals are less likely to get lost among the mass of editorial material and commercials that populate daily newspapers. You can choose a premade newspaper template and customize the text and visuals to your specifications.

Join Forces

Grouping together can make a display ad in the local business or classified section affordable for multiple businesses, which might not otherwise be able to afford such a prominent and high-traffic site. It would be cost-effective for three podiatrists in different parts of town to pool their resources and purchase a single colorful advertisement. At a third of the cost of a solo enterprise, all the doctors' specialties may be advertised in one ad, with their names, addresses, and phone numbers provided at the bottom.

One advertisement could feature a gourmet food store, while another could feature a hair salon, all located in the same shopping center. Small ads for local businesses can be found in the community business section of many local newspapers at a fraction of the cost of full-page ads for the same business.

Publish It

Local media outlets are always on the lookout for credible sources in a variety of fields to consult when breaking stories require it. Writing an opinion column and sending it to the paper's opinion/editorial editor is an excellent way to get things started. Write an opinion piece and send it to your local newspaper's opinion page editor if you work in the financial sector and have strong feelings about the present economic crisis. Before starting to write, you may want to contact the editor to check if they are interested in this submission.

Write a letter or email to the editor or a reporter whose byline you recognize, introducing yourself and offering your services as a resource for news articles related to your expertise. If you work in tax preparation, for instance, you might want to let the local press know that you're available for interviews. If you are a lawyer who focuses on immigration law, you can also offer to be quoted as a source by letting the editor know that you are happy to do so whenever necessary. Meeting people in the fields journalists write about is a great way to get your name out there, and it doesn't cost you a dime.
