Organizing a workspace for remote work

Over the past couple of years, remote work has become an integral part of our lives. Many were finally convinced of the need for a home office.

Still, sitting on the couch, at the dinner table or lying in bed, it is difficult to work effectively because one often loses concentration. This is due to the fact that the brain perceives these areas as places to relax, watch TV or eat. Therefore, the work area must be clearly marked, then you will perceive it properly and will be able to work.

The best option is to equip a workplace for each person living in the house, with all the amenities and elements they need. In reality, it is difficult to allocate space for several home offices so that household members do not interfere with each other. Therefore, let’s take a look at some tips on organizing a place that is suitable for both effective work and productive study.

There should be a lot of light in the workplace area

If you have the opportunity to place your home office by the window - that would be just perfect. But if it's not possible, don't worry. An alternative option is an adjustable table lamp with a lukewarm light. The temperature of the lamp should vary between 2500 and 3500 Kelvin.

Illumination is an extremely important factor when working with documents or at a computer. Firstly, properly chosen light can improve concentration and productivity. Secondly, illumination is directly related to our health - too bright, cold or fluorescent light can adversely affect vision.

Choose the right furniture

A table and chair are the basis of a home office. Their acquisition must be approached with special care. Furniture should be ergonomic, that is, conducive to comfortable work due to the correct distribution of the weight of the body. Spending all day in one position is bad for your spine, so we recommend choosing a table and chair that can be adjusted in height, so you can work both sitting and standing. If you’re also looking for luxury bedroom sets, take a look at our online store.

By the way, a periodic change of position has a beneficial effect not only on health, but also on productivity.

Divide the space into areas

To increase the efficiency of work, we advise you to think about design and interior solutions that will help to zone your house or flat. This is necessary for easy switching from leisure to work and vice versa. For example, install a screen or hang a curtain. The advantage of these solutions lies in their mobility. If desired, you can leave the work area open, and close it before important calls and meetings. By the way, these solutions will provide a nice calm background for video calls, because  it is not very pleasant to see dirty dishes or scattered clothes on the background of the interlocutor.

Another option is a rack - also a very convenient solution that will create additional space for storing work papers on the shelves and at the same time not interfere with natural light from the windows.

In addition, you can highlight the workspace using color schemes. For example, paint a section of the wall near the table with a contrasting shade. This will help to visually separate the home office, make it more aesthetic and inspiring.

Opt for a mobile home office

Being in the same location for 5 days in a row, whether it's a shared office or your personal office, is tiring and reduces productivity. We advise you to purchase additional items that will allow you to move the office around the home. For example, a compact stand table can be used not only for nice breakfasts in bed, but also for working at a computer while sitting on the couch. And to maintain the correct position of the spine and relieve tension from the neck area, use a special massage pillow.

Remember about the daily regime

Working from home implies both comfort and the greatest responsibility for a nice result and increased self-discipline. Psychologists recommend making a plan by the hour: schedule your whole day, starting from the time you get up and ending with bedtime, and try to stick to the schedule.

If you have children, schedule time for play or activities with them. This will help you switch from work tasks, relax and return to work with new solutions.

If a friend unexpectedly calls you during work, it is better to politely transfer the conversation to “out of office” hours. If you are a creative person and cannot devote a long time to the monotonous execution of one task, then break it into stages, and after completing it, interrupt for another activity.

Watch your health

Every day on the way to work and home, you provide yourself with even a small but tangible physical activity. When working remotely, it is easy to forget about this. In order to feel good, do at least 20 minutes of exercise a day. Find your favorite, but not too complicated combinations.

Do not forget about regular meals - at home you have the opportunity to eat small portions at regular intervals. And don't forget to drink water!

Develop

Remote work saves at least 2 hours of free time per day. Use this time productively, read books, and motivate yourself to do new things.

The home office is more of a necessity than a whim these days. To make sure you don’t forget anything, here is a checklist of pieces of furniture that should definitely be present at your workplace:

  • A table suitable in size for placing work equipment, papers and other accessories.
  • An ergonomic chair.
  • A nightstand with drawers.
  • Containers and organizers for papers and stationery.
  • A table lamp with adjustable light.
  • Optionally, a mood board above the table to create the right mood.
