Sidhartha Kumar Mathur Explains How Technology Enhances the Educational System

Today, technology is a vital part of the educational system. From the widespread adoption of classroom computers in the 1980s and 1990s to the full integration of online resources available today, the spectrum of technology’s involvement in the school system has only broadened as the years have gone by.

Sidhartha Kumar Mathur, a technology entrepreneur and counselor from West Friendship, Maryland, shares that the most important technology has improved the educational system.

The Use of Computers

Without the use of desktop and laptop computers, the education system would look very different. Today, many schools have 1:1 laptop programs that give a computer or tablet to all of their students. These students can use their laptops or tablets constantly throughout the day, taking advantage of the machine’s capabilities for organization and accessing online resources.

Computers have helped in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) courses and the arts, English, History, and all other topics.

Online Resources

Today, there is a proliferation of information available online in all disciplines. Many tools are available both in the classroom and at home for extended learning and study. These include BrainPop and Khan Academy.

Advanced search engines like Google (News - Alert) can help students find information on nearly any topic they cover in school. They can find legitimate resources for any school paper or project. Students can also learn how to select the best resources for their project, weeding out unreliable sources.

Audio and video resources are frequently helpful for students with differing learning needs. Many students find it easier to absorb information through visual or auditory means. For example, watching contemporary news footage of a historical event can bring a new perspective and bring the past home for students.

Hands-On Experience for Students

Students can experience technology topics and other academic subjects with hands-on experience. Graphic design and computer science are two of the most popular fields of study.

Suppose a student has an objection to dissecting an animal for biology class. In that case, they can take part in a computer simulation that imparts the same information without compromising the student’s beliefs. There are many other examples of how computers and technology have enhanced students' classroom and at-home experience.

Creativity and Artistic Expression

Arts and music students can use technology to communicate their ideas to their classes and teachers. Software and hardware like MIDI stations are available to help students compose and perform music in the classroom. These tools also help to teach music theory and other important topics.

In the arts, students may study graphic design, digital media, and other disciplines. Having classroom computers enables students to practice their skills and express themselves on a higher level.

Scientific and Mathematical Tools

Math and science classes use technological tools to help them complete labs and problem sets. Today, labs are greatly enhanced by technology, preparing high school students for the content they may encounter in college.

Two of the most popular scientific and mathematical learning systems that are enhanced by technology include problem-based learning and open-ended inquiry learning.

Tools for Collaboration

Online tools like Google Classroom and Google Docs have made it much easier for study groups to work together and to create a central document that they can turn in for their teacher’s approval. Computers can enhance teamwork, making it simpler for different team members to use their strengths.

Administrative Tools

Teachers and administrators have also had their jobs made easier through digital tools. Online grade books like PowerSchool and classroom organizational services like Schoology have made it simple for teachers to communicate students’ current grades to parents and administrators. This gives parents real-time information on their students’ progress and helps them keep up with their work much more efficiently.

Remote Learning

During the worst phase of the Covid pandemic, schools were shuttered, and remote learning took over. Teachers and students had the opportunity to hone their remote learning skills during this transformative period. Remote learning made it possible for teachers to see their students, lecture, and answer questions individually.

While there were some learning losses during this first widespread adoption of remote learning, students and teachers learned many lessons that will help them succeed if the practice has to be put in place again.

Homeschooled students will continue to use remote learning techniques to access teachers and information they would otherwise not be able to contact.

Enhancing the Classroom and At-Home Learning Experiences

According to Sidhartha Kumar Mathur, the widespread adoption of technology has made the classroom a more effective learning environment. Students can also bring this technology home, enhancing their studies and allowing for the reinforcement of important information.

Sidhartha Kumar Mathur states that all school districts should look into how student achievement could be enhanced through technology. In addition, the advantages of technology for teachers and administrators should be investigated.
