5 Ways Technology Has Changed the Workplace

Technology has revolutionized almost every single aspect of our lives, from entertainment to transport to the workplace. The use of technologies such as the internet has had a huge effect on the way companies and organizations operate, and what the daily routines of workers consist of. There are countless ways that technology has changed the workplaces of most people, but here we will explore five of the most notable!

Working from Home

The increase in working from home has risen sharply due to the current coronavirus pandemic, however the trend was rising consistently for a long time before that. The use of the internet and intranet systems to communicate with co-workers and clients has meant that, for many companies, physical distance is no longer any obstacle to productivity.

People who are able to work from home also report greater levels of job satisfaction and loyalty to the companies that they work for!

Reduced Costs

The rise in home working does not just save employees costs on transport – it also saves costs for their employers. Costs of things like utilities (heating, electricity, water, etc) in a physical office are reduced when employees work from home, as well as travel expenses not needing to be paid out. There are even expenses that you may not consider when operating from a physical office – like snacks and coffee, which can mount up over the course of a year!

Security

Although the use of technology to maintain and operate systems vital to companies leaves data and systems potentially vulnerable to hacks, leaks, and other cybercrime, technology also provides security against these threats. Antivirus software is just one example of this, as are authentication and access management systems that require employees to verify their identity in order to access particular data or software. This is, on the whole, far more preferable, effective, and convenient than the days of storing large quantities of physical records in lockers or safes.

Efficiency

The effect of software and technology on efficiency is huge – many tasks can now be automated and carried out far more quickly and easily than in years gone by. With productivity increasing and many mundane tasks made much easier with the help of technology, employees and companies are able to focus time and attention on the most profitable tasks.

Technology also takes a lot of effort away from managers – for example, scheduling software can be used to automatically designate employee shift patterns and highlight any potential issues, something that a full-time administrator may have had to do previously! The effect of technology on time management in the workplace is vast.

Collaboration

As well as allowing co-workers to communicate with each other more easily through various messaging and phone/video conferencing tools, developments in cloud technology and access management now enable collaboration on projects from separate homes or offices. Multiple workers can often work on and edit the same document in real time from separate locations without having to send files back and forth!
