How is Biotechnology Accelerating Quality of Life

Biotechnology means any technological application that uses biological systems, living organisms to make or modify products for specific use. The idea of biotechnology is to improve lives and health of people living on this planet. There are companies which are working at forefront of biology and technology and investing resources in fields like genetic engineering etc. The incredible diversity in nature helps in defining the possibility and impossibility of things around us! Fortunately, biotechnology is a means to see things with an altogether different perspective.

How is biotechnology helping the world?

Even when the organisms die, DNA passes on and thus every organism gives food for thought to all the scientists. Biotechnology is helping the society to meet most pressing challenges of this era! Read on further to get acquainted with the impact of molecular composition!

Healing the world

Biotech people are investing their time in experimentation to heal the world by doing genetic makeup on available resources. More than developed, developing nations require exploration of biotechnology. The healing of biotechnology is focused towards below:

  • saving lives of millions of children due to malnutrition, lack of timely treatment etc
  • the idea is to combat serious illness and giving a gift of health to the nation
  • to work towards providing adequate medical protection to every resident of this planet
  • disease can be cured if it is detected in time and hence creating price tools for disease detection
  • ability to tailor treatments to minimise health risks and side effects
  • improving metabolism and health of people through quality food
  • improving hygiene index of people living in developing countries to combat deadly diseases

Feeding the world

Most of the diseases are originated due to unhygienic food items! Hence, it is imperative to fix the problem at root level. Biotech is helping the world by contributing in production of such fertilisers which are healthy for the crop as well as for human health.

  • The crops are enriched with vitamin and nutrients so that people of all age groups don’t have to rely on supplements
  • The focus is towards improving food and crop oil content for better cardiovascular health
  • Promoting organic farming which uses minimal chemicals and promote good health
  • Putting in efforts towards producing foods which are free of allergens and toxins
  • Introduction of cell-based meats including cellular agriculture known as ‘clean meat’ as it doesn’t require slaughtering of animals
  • Increasing the crop yields by using least amount of toxic inputs

Fuelling the world

The industries require many sources to produce the desired output. Gladly the economy is growing but unfortunately, the environment is depleting. Biotechnology is contributing towards fuelling a.k.a resourcing the world by:

  • Using biomass waste products to generate energy
  • Making use of biofuels instead of petrol, diesel in order to decrease greenhouse gas emissions by more than 50%
  • Monitoring the chemical manufacturing processes so as to reduce the wasteful emissions causing air and water pollution by more than 80%
  • Harnessing potential of biocatalysts such as enzymes, yeast and other microbes which can aid in manufacturing processes
  • Contributing in reduction of waste generation, dependency on petrochemicals and usage of water
  • Attaining cost and process efficiencies
