Twitter Takes Over Markana to Open Twitter University

By Ed Silverstein, TMCnet Contributor

Twitter’s (News - Alert) many engineers will have access to a wide variety of advanced instruction with the opening of Twitter University, after the micro-blogging site acquired Marakana.

Financial terms about the acquisition were not released, but it holds great promise for Twitter’s commitment to continuing education for its engineers.

“To help our engineers grow, it’s important for them to have access to world-class technical training, along with opportunities to teach the skills they’ve mastered. To that end, we’re establishing Twitter University,” said Chris Fry, senior vice president of engineering at Twitter, in a blog post. “We want Twitter to be the best place in the world for engineers to work…Being able to continually learn on the job and develop a sense of expertise or mastery is a fundamental factor in success in the technology industry and long term happiness at a company. Twitter University will be a vital foundation for our engineering organization.”

The move also shows how Twitter wants to keep its skilled employees up to date with open source topics, and could be a draw to lure employees there – as opposed to them taking jobs at other social media or tech companies.

Marakana began teaching classes at Twitter several months ago, according to a blog post from founders, Marko and Sasa Gargenta.

Overall, Marakana has focused on open source training, such as on Android (News - Alert), Hadoop, HTML5, Java, jQuery, Python and Scala. It has already taught more than 100,000 software engineers in classrooms. Some five million students took free online courses offered via video instruction.

It will no longer offer education to individuals or organizations, according to ZDNet.

Many members of the Marakana faculty will now teach at NewCircle, which also teaches open source topics. Marakana encourages interested students – who are not affiliated with Twitter University – to take classes at NewCircle, according to a blog post. Some of the Twitter University content will later appear online for the public, Fry said.

It was also reported that Twitter University will build on existing educational programs for the company’s engineers.

“We currently offer employees a whole swath of technical trainings, from orientation classes for new engineers to iOS Bootcamp, JVM Fundamentals, Distributed Systems, Scala School, and more for those who want to develop new skills. Most of these classes are taught by our own team members, and many of them have been organized during our quarterly Hack Weeks –– a testament to our engineers’ passion for learning and education,” Fry said.
