Firefox 23 Improves Sharing, Security and Sports a New Logo

By Ed Silverstein, TMCnet Contributor

Mozilla (News - Alert) has launched Firefox 23 for several operating systems. There are a few changes in the new version that have grabbed the attention of sector watchers.

One of the most engaging changes is how it features a new logo. The minor changes found in the logo mark the third time the logo has changed in 10 years, news reports said.

There are also changes in security and sharing in the new version.

First, let’s turn to sharing. The sharing feature lets users share content with their identified friends or followers in a single click, according to The Next Web. The share button is found on the Firefox toolbar. Also, users can share content with friends, followers and networks while in Firefox.

“Users can share directly from the sidebar without having to leave their current page,” according to a review in TUAW. “If you're in the middle of reading an article on Rolling Stone, for example, this new feature will allow you to post about it to your Facebook (News - Alert), Cliqz or other social pages without leaving the site. At the moment the service only works with Facebook Messenger for Firefox and Cliqz, but more providers will be added when they start using the social API.”

When it comes to security improvements, a mixed content blocker “prevents non-secure (HTTP) content on a website from being read or modified by attackers by blocking the non-secure content from being compromised,” The Next Web said.

Mixed content is when a webpage with both secure (HTTPS) and non-secure (HTTP) content is provided over a secure data channel to the browser, the report explains.

Also, the new version has a network monitor, which breaks down website components, and shows how long each will load, the report adds.

Some other new features include the “Awesome Screen,” a “Switch to Tab” option, and the hiding of a navigation bar when scrolling down.

In addition, Firefox 23 eliminates the blink HTML tag (News - Alert) found in earlier versions and no longer lets users turn off JavaScript from the “Options” pane, according to Extreme Tech.

The next version, Firefox 24, is scheduled to be released in September.

A few of the changes found in Firefox 23 were announced in a recent Mozilla blog post.

“Over the last year, we’ve been working on ways to integrate social sites and services directly into Firefox to quickly and easily connect you with your friends and family,” according to the blog post from Mozilla. “Last year, we launched with Facebook as the first social integration partner in Firefox. Soon after that we added Cliqz, Mixi and msnNOW and we look forward to integrating more social sites, services and apps into Firefox to make your browsing experience more social, customizable and personal.”
