Pinterest Launches New 'Actionable' Formatted Pins

By Oliver VanDervoort, Contributing Writer

Pinterest is one of the newest successful social media sites on the Web. The service is taking steps to make it more financially lucrative by featuring some of the biggest brand names on the market today. The site has actually been around since 2010 but seems to be really picking up the pace in 2013. Part of the reason the social media site has seen such success is that the way you post is much more addictive than some of their competitors.

The company has also taken steps to make sure that it is curating the site better than it was in the last couple of years. Spam accounts are always going to be a problem for social media sites, but Pinterest went after those fake accounts pretty aggressively as the calendar moved towards 2013. All this cleanup and all this prep has led to the social site getting more aggressive in money making opportunities as well, such as the new type of pin which is explicitly set aside for major retailers and brands in the United States and North America.

GigaOm is reporting that there are actually three new types of pins being offered up. These new types were all launched on Sunday night. The new pins will be separated into three different categories: for food, for retailers and for movies. It appears that retailers have been waiting for Pinterest to make this move. The list of those who are looking to take advantage of the new format include companies like Neiman Marcus, Overstock, REI, Sephora, Sony, Target (News - Alert), Urban Outfitters, Netflix and Rotten Tomatoes as well as many others.

Pinterest reps are stressing that this is not just another form of advertising for the companies. Instead, this new format will allow for pins to be more “actionable.” Those actionable features include an ingredient list for food pins and information about products or movies, depending on what kind of pin you click on.
