Google Updates Mapping Services on Apple iOS

By Ashley Caputo, TMCnet Web Editor

Along with expanding its empire into music streaming services, Google (News - Alert) has added an update to its infamous Google Maps service for Apple iOS.

A few months ago, Apple replaced its Google Maps feature with its own mapping system, native to its own devices. The update adds new options to search for nearby places of interest, including restaurants, hotels, post offices and coffee shops, so that users don’t have to type out each word when they search.

With all of the devices on the market and their individual operating systems, it’s difficult for companies to develop an app compatible with every single platform, which is why Google has added an iTunes update for Apple users that allows them to enjoy features Android (News - Alert) users have had for years, like turn-by-turn navigation.

Google Maps has integrated business searches, drag gable maps, satellite imagery, and even earth views. Its navigation feature may also store addresses that are used frequently or are a part of an upcoming trip.

The new update to iTunes also synchronizes any addresses users have stored on their Google accounts and not on their smartphones.

Google’s mapping system has even replaced the once notorious MapQuest, as most users already have the Google Maps app installed on their smartphones. It is fair to say that it’s one of the most trusted and sought-after mapping apps on the market.

The iOS update will be made available in Bahrain, Egypt, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates as well, where users have the ability to change distance measurements from miles to kilometers.
