ITEXPO Keynote Highlights the Benefits of Federation

By Rich Steeves, TMCnet Web Editor

They say that two heads are better than one and that three is a lucky number. It stands to reason, then, that a coalition of three dynamic communications technology companies can serve to bring dynamic services to customers. The first keynote address at ITEXPO Miami 2013 highlighted a federation created by three companies well positioned in the IP communications space: Taqua, BroadSoft and IntelePeer (News - Alert).

Payam Maveddat, executive vice president of product management at Taqua, opened up the session by reminding us of the impending death of the PSTN. He cited studies stating that it would be gone by 2018, and cited statistics about the growing adoption of IP communications. In 2009, 21 percent of companies had deployed VoIP technology, and that percentage rose to 24 percent in 2012. Enterprise migration to IP is clearly inevitable, but there are still challenges. Maveddat spoke about how there are so many “VoIP islands” out there and how carriers must peer with each other and allow communications between technologies without the need for expensive equipment and with a high level of security.

The answer to this dilemma, according to Maveddat, is a federation. In this way, the islands can talk to each other reliably and economically. Taqua (News - Alert) has partnered with Intelepeer and BroadSoft to create a Federation-as-a-Service offering to enable UC enterprise users in a service provider domain to reach out and communicate others who use the same platform in other networks.

Leslie Ferry, VP of marketing at Broadsoft, emphasized consumer desire for a better experience, comparing it to watching a basketball game on HD vs. standard definition. We are used to expecting the best. Finally, the director of service provider business development at Intelepeer discussed its role in the federation, allowing service providers to offer more services to address issues like quality of service.
