By Shankar Pandiath, TMCnet Contributor

Social networking sites are surely the most visited and used sites, today. Billions of people log into their account or create a new account with the social networking sites. Compared to the Facebook and Twitter sites, Google (News - Alert)+ is a rather new one. This social networking website has gained popularity since its first launch in 2011. It hasn’t been even two years since its launch and it has already joined the ‘100 million’ club of monthly unique visitors. The popularity of a website is often measured by the number of new visitors it has each month. After Facebook (News - Alert) and Twitter, Google+ has now joined the club.

According to the reports published by Google, this social networking site has 105 million unique monthly visitors, measured in October 2012. Exactly a year ago to date, Google+ had 65.3 million new monthly visitors. The numbers have improved by almost 61 percent since then. This is surely gigantic news for Google+, as the site faced tough competition from Facebook. Nonetheless, since its launch, Google+ has come a long way, with thousands of visitors signing up for an account, every day.

In this same time period, Facebook has earned 4.3 percent more unique monthly visitors, which is comparatively lower than what Google+ has achieved. However, the fact is the rapid rate of Google+ success was noticed, in its first year of launch. Meanwhile, Facebook with its overflowing numbers has more unique monthly visits than Google+. Nevertheless, Google+ is fast climbing the popularity charts, and has tremendously improved over the last 14 months. It was not easy, given the fact that Facebook has already become the most used social networking site, globally.

The report has been published by comScore (News - Alert), a popular media analytical team. According to comscore’s head of the research team - “The average time spent by a user on Google+ each month was only three minutes, a year ago. Facebook, in comparison, was used for more than seven hours every month by a user. This number has drastically improved for Google+ since then, and it currently has more than 135 million active users for each month. This is positive news for Google+.”

The ‘100 million monthly visitor’ club is surely a prestigious landmark for any social networking site. Google+ was launched with a basic social networking interface, more like Facebook, but it had some unique features, like friend circle, to attract users.

The website has been well developed and frequently updated during the last year, which has resulted in a 61 percent increase in its popularity. The user friendly interface and the newly added features of Google+ have helped it gain the glory that it has earned today. Many additional tools have been released over the last year to bridge Google+ with Facebook. That is another reason behind its popularity, claimed the reports.
