Facebook Warns that too Much Can be a Bad Thing

By Oliver VanDervoort, Contributing Writer

There is very little doubt that the longer you and I spend on Facebook (News - Alert), the better it is for the social media giant. The company long ago set its sights beyond allowing people to just interact with each other for short periods of time, and instead has turned into a site that encourages people to browse for hours.

The company has taken some rather large steps to get businesses more involved in the Facebook experience. The social media site has even come up with ways for businesses to draw in their customers online.

That is why it was strange to see Facebook give a nod to those who have long said that too much Facebook can actually be detrimental to us. Facebook recently put up a posting on its dedicated page that had a picture of a birthday cake and the slogan, “Birthday cakes are made for people to be together. They give friends a place to gather and celebrate. But too much cake probably isn’t healthy. So birthday cake is a lot like Facebook.” The website, which used to brag about how long people were on the site as one of its top accomplishments, appears to be changing.

The site now tends to focus more on how many items are shared from one user to another, rather than how long those users were browsing the site. The social networking giant is surely noticing that it has coming under more attacks because of how much time people tend to spend online.   The site clearly isn’t going to go out of its way to keep people from spending as much time as they like on the site, which would ultimately go against their interest. There does appear to be an effort by the site to recognize that there is such a thing as too much of a good thing. That in and of itself is a nice step forward.
