Instagram to Rescue Windows Phone

By Julie Griffin, Contributing Writer

You heard it here first – unless of course, you saw the Nokia (News - Alert) commercial for the new Pure View Camera for Lumia 920 Windows Phone. It looks as though Instagram will be among the apps available for the Windows Phone (News - Alert) 8.

Just as Instagram came to Facebook's rescue around the time of its IPO, it makes another heroic appearance on behalf of Windows Phone 8 in time for its fall debut.

As one scrupulous tech journalist points out, if you look at closely at the video, you’ll notice that an icon for Instagram is present on the phone’s home screen.

According to the article, “Instagram is one of the most-requested apps.”

And indeed, it does seem that Instagram is what all the kids are talking about – and not just the "rich kids on summer break." Business Insider investigated as six people ages 17 to 26 used Facebook (News - Alert). What they discovered was that the panel universally found some of Facebook’s features to be flawed, like Timeline.

But they all loved Instagram. As one participant put it, “If I got rid of my Facebook, I would not be out of the loop with my friends as long as I'm on Instagram.”

Experts predicted that Instagram would be a hit, but did anybody expect that it would be more of a hit than Facebook?

It wasn’t too long ago that Facebook announced their $1-billion dollar investment in Instagram. After the world’s largest social media network was criticized for failing to generate revenue from mobile advertising, Facebook made the announcement of acquisition.

The application was designed for publishing content directly from the camera features of smartphones.

However, when Facebook later produced an Instagram twin, it became clear that although Facebook might have invested in the technology, the company did not own the brand.

It turns out that Instagram was smart to deploy their photo-sharing app across Facebook, but even smarter for not binding itself to any contracts. Six months after doing business with Facebook, Instragram exploded by 1179 percent, expanding its fan base from 860,000 to 11 million.
