Facebook Testing New 'Save for Later' Feature

By Tanya Palta, TMCnet Contributing Writer

Facebook (News - Alert) has had a couple of rough months and the IPO fiasco isn’t really helping the company’s reputation. In fact, today the Facebook stock reportedly fell to an all new low, however, fortunately that isn’t stopping the social-networking site from introducing new enhancements to the website and improving the overall user experience.

If you are one of the billion active Facebook users, then you would have probably noticed a new desktop feature on your Facebook page. The “Save for Later” is a new feature for desktop and mobile that primary lets Facebook users add stories to a saved folder. Basically, think Instapaper for Facebook. The feature is similar to what other services call "favorites" (like Twitter (News - Alert)) and the idea is to browse the saved posts in your own feed at your convenience.

The saved folder can be found under the Apps  section in Facebook’s iOS and desktop versions and to save a story on an iOS device, one needs to just hold their finger on the feature to access the pop-up saying “Save” to save it in the folder. The same option can be accessed on the desktop version by just pointing the mouse towards the share, comment and like section.

“We are testing the ability to save news feed stories with a small percentage of users,” the company said.

Twitter already has something similar, however, the new Facebook feature is fundamentally different from Twitter’s favorites, since other Facebook users won’t receive a notification when a story is saved in a newsfeed. This makes the whole experience discreet and Facebook users will no doubt appreciate the privacy.

There is no way to download the Facebook “Save for Later” option and Facebook will start rolling it out in phases, just like the still controversial Timeline (News - Alert).
