Foursquare Introduces Advertising Through Promotion

By Lyndsay Krisel, TMCnet Contributor

Foursquare (News - Alert) is back on top, this time with a new feature known as “Local Updates.”

These updates now enable companies and businesses to interact with foursquare users from within the friend’s tab of the app from venues that you frequent. Now, the popular social service is taking it a step further with “Promoted Updates,” which are to appear in the Explore tab section.

The company has been boomingly busy lately working hard on updating its app, and adding more value for other businesses that rely on its service to bring in new business. Its idea is to take everything that it knows about you, and make signs for its Promoted Updates partners.

Noah Weiss, foursquare product manager, called this feature “Google (News - Alert) AdWords for the real world.”

When using the explore tab in foursquare, it locates your immediate location and gives you recommendations on places to go and things to do with your friends in that particular area.

These features definitely seem to be the next best thing for Foursquare as a business, and are an all time dependent for bringing in revenue to several other businesses.

Weiss explains that each merchant was carefully handpicked, and that they can use the promoted update feature to share information about their store, or offer deals that might lure you on in. It uses all of the things it can determine about you, based on your likes, lists, tips and friends, to recommend a quality place to go that you will fully enjoy.

Foursquare will soon be on its way to businesses self-service tools so that they can create their own, but these features are a top priority, boosting businesses and user satisfaction globally.
