Supreme Court Tweets: Twitter Once again Used Extensively to Comment on Important News

By Ed Silverstein, TMCnet Contributor

A lot of Americans opted to tweet their comments on Thursday’s critical decision by the U.S. Supreme Court which upheld most of the health-care reform law known as “Obamacare.”

The number of tweets on Twitter (News - Alert) about the ruling over the Affordable Care Act (ACA) was higher than 13,000 a minute at 10:17 a.m. That was just after the Supreme Court announced its ruling.

That is far more than the 900 tweets a minute tweeted during the high court’s oral arguments on the case in March, Rachael Horwitz, a spokeswoman for Twitter, told The Hartford Courant newspaper.

The high volume may have had something to do with CNN and Fox News, as well as other news organizations, initially incorrectly reporting that most of the ACA was ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court.

The Courant reported that a tweet from CNN Breaking News (@cnnbrk) which featured incorrect news was re-tweeted over 1,100 times.

In addition, USA Today said that both CNN and Fox News incorrectly reported that the "individual mandate" portion of the ACA was struck down.

In fact, the Supreme Court apparently upheld most of the ACA, according to a report from TMCnet. The effect of the ruling appears to be that individuals can be required to purchase health insurance or pay a fee. It is considered a "tax" in the five-to-four ruling by the justices. An excise tax on medical devices also remains in place – despite an outcry from many device makers.

In putting the errors in context, USA Today said it is more likely for reporters to make a mistake about the content of Supreme Court opinions because of their complexity.

"It's easier to make the mistakes, and the mistakes are made in more places, and the evidence that you made the mistake is available," Tom Rosenstiel, director of the Project for Excellence in Journalism, told USA Today. "One of the few laws of journalism is that speed is the enemy of accuracy."
