France has First Real Twitter Scandal

By Oliver VanDervoort, Contributing Writer

There are very good aspects of social media sites and if you are not careful there are plenty of negatives. While Twitterand Facebook (News - Alert) and the other big social networking sites would like to focus only on the good, one doesn’t need to look very far for a popular, or at least well known person, making a fool of themselves using one of the big sites. People have still not figured out that it is far too easy to make a mistake that will be out on the Web for the world to see. It appears that new French President Francois Hollande's girlfriend is learning this lesson the hard way.

There are not just a few people who wish that luminaries of the political and religioussects would stay off of Twitter (News - Alert) and Facebook altogether, but most of these people want to be able to reach out to their constituents. That only allows these same well known politicians to have a venue in which they can stir up trouble, such as Valerie Trierweiler who many believe made a dig at Hollande’s ex-wife.

While the tweet was supposedly merely one of support for Olivier Falorni, a politician in the Western part of France, it was also seen as one that was built to slight Segolene Royal, the mother of Hollande’s four children. The tweet says“"Have courage, Olivier Falorni." and is considered a shot across the bow of Royal who is running against, and currently holds a slim lead over Falorni.

Of course, being the new romantic interest of Royal’s former husband means that there is bound to be some tongues wagging. The bad blood that has been between Royal and Trierweiler has never exactly been a secret, but there are rarely such obvious clashes as the one that seems to have risen over this particular election. Whether Twitter will remain the battle ground remains to be seen, but it could make for interesting political drama over the next few weeks.
