Survey: 40 Percent of Smartphone Owners Have Redeemed Digital Coupons

By David Delony, Contributing Writer

Smartphone users appear to be doing more than making calls, sending texts and using various apps on their phones, according to a survey by CouponCabin.com. They may actually be saving money by using coupons.

The survey found that 40 percent of smartphone owners regularly redeemed coupons on their devices. In addition, almost one-third of smartphone users searched for coupons on their phones at least once a month.

The survey was conducted over two days in late March by Harris Interactive (News - Alert) on behalf of CouponCabin. The sample included 3,312 adults over the age of 18. CouponCabin said the data came with one caveat: the survey is not based on a probability sample and the researchers could not calculate any sampling errors.

Seventy-two percent of respondents said they were at least likely to use a mobile app to find coupons.

Users have redeemed a wide variety of coupons on their phones. The most popular type of coupons were “daily deals,” with 41 percent of respondents choosing them. The next most popular type was grocery coupons, with 39 percent. Online coupons codes were next at 34 percent.

Even in the digital era, it seems impossible to escape from paper. Printable coupons were also popular, with 29 percent of respondents redeeming them.

Another thing people like is free stuff. Twenty-four percent of respondents said they redeemed coupons for free samples or coupons for free trials.

Finally, 23 percent of respondents said they redeemed coupons for other non-grocery items.

CouponCabin has released a new app that lets smartphone users find coupons for just about every product category available on their smartphones, including groceries, printable coupons and codes, redeemable online.

Users also get gas price comparisons and coupons for local services. (Hopefully, customers will use the money they're saving to leave better tips in restaurants. Another CouponCabin survey found that one-third of adults have not left a tip after receiving what they considered below-average beverage service.)

“Unlike many other coupon apps, we're excited to share this all-in-one app that offers basically every type of coupon you'll ever want," said Scott Kluth, CEO and Founder of CouponCabin.com. “As we continue to grow, we've learned that our users are hungry for an app that puts the power of quality couponing in the palm of their hands, and our new app does just that – and more!"

The app was designed by Chicago-based mobile development firm Cyber WalkAbout.

“Cyber WalkAbout was the ultimate partner in this project and we couldn't have created this app without their expertise," Kluth said. "We look forward to further work with them as we continue to add new features and savings tools on our upcoming versions."

Kluth is also an angel investor in Cyber Walkabout.
