Avengers Sets Sales Record on Fandango Mobile

By Michelle Amodio, TMCnet Contributor

Fandango reported a major ticketing milestone for its mobile app. Fans of the masked crusaders, “The Avengers,” bought tickets for the movie in droves from their mobile devices, clocking in at 42 percent for this past Sunday’s sales alone.

These figured indicate more and more moviegoers are turning to their mobile devices as the primary method of buying tickets.

Fandango general manager Rick Butler said that "mobile has clearly transitioned from just an alternative way to buy tickets to a primary choice for many weekend moviegoers."

A recent Fandango online survey found that 66 percent of “Avengers” fans plan to see the movie more than once in the theater, indicating repeat viewings throughout the week. As of Monday, the film still accounts for 94 percent of all daily ticket sales from the movie ticket sale site.

“Fandango continues to see millions of fans taking advantage of our many conveniences and innovations to guarantee their seats, particularly with movies in hot demand like ‘The Avengers,’” said Butler.

The only other movie to come close to breaking the record was “The Hunger Games,” which Fandango reported 60,000 tickets sold through its Web site, for the peak selling period.

Fandango’s mobile record with “The Hunger Games” was, before “The Avengers,” the movie with the most tickets ever sold on opening weekend via mobile. “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” took the spot prior to both.

Earlier this year, Fandango introduced a PayPal option, available on its mobile version for iPhone (News - Alert) and Android, making it easier for movie aficionados to purchase advance tickets on the go.

“We first offered PayPal as a payment option on the Web, and we’re now pleased to extend it to mobile,” said Butler at the time of launch. “More than 20 percent of Fandango’s ticket sales come from mobile devices and, PayPal (News - Alert) will offer an additional safe, easy and fast payment method for our moviegoers on the go.”

Fandango has seen a 73-percent year-over-year increase in mobile ticket sales in 2011. The year overall marked the best-performing year in the company's 11-year history, with record highs for its ticket sales, online and mobile traffic, advertising sales and the number of theater screens it represents across the country.
