HD Voice News Publishes 2nd Annual Comprehensive HD Voice Report

Norwalk, CT, April 20, 2012 HD Voice News announced the publication of “HD Voice 2012: Proliferation,” an annual comprehensive report on the worldwide growing use of wideband voice. The report is available on www.TMCnet.com under Resources/Research Reports.

“HD Voice 2012: Proliferation” is based upon three years of accumulated research and dialogue with services providers, network equipment vendors, and OEM suppliers. The report documents a wide ecosystem of products and services delivering HD voice in the real world today. It discusses the trends for the proliferation of HD voice in markets around the world and obstacles that remain for ubiquitous wideband availability.

HD voice adoption has accelerated significantly over the last twelve months, with at least 52 mobile HD voice deployments completed or in progress around the world. Lead by France Telecom (News - Alert), Deutsche Telekom, and Telekom Austria, there are 28 HD voice networks in Europe deployed by 11 different carriers.

“It’s easier to count the HD voice ‘have nots’ countries in Europe,” said HD Voice News Editor-in-Chief Doug Mohney. “Pending U.S. VoLTE deployments get a lot of headlines, but HD voice is already deployed by six carriers in Africa and the Middle East.”

Another key advancement has been movement by larger providers to provide and support SIP interconnection services both in-network and between other service providers. Neutral Tandem (News - Alert) and Verizon Business both support G.722 HD voice broadband calls -- albeit using different business models -- and Level 3 says it will to do so in-network later this year.

“Significant progress has been made to solve the ‘island problem’ in SIP interconnectivity for HD voice and video,” said Mohney.

Key Report Findings Examined:

  • The U.S. cable industry has not (yet) announced a residential HD voice deployment, but Comcast (News - Alert) now offers HD voice as a part of its managed business cloud service.
  • HD voice “islands” are now being connected. Major progress has been made for SIP interoperability and peering, a major concern last year.
  • Will there be a pull-through relationship between mobile HD voice service and broadband HD voice services for business and consumers, similar to smartphone and tablet mobility? It is an open question.
  • CAT-iq 2.0 -- an enabling technology for residential HD voice -- has been deployed by Deutsche Telekom (News - Alert) and France Telecom.
