Sony Hacked Again, This Time for Your Credit Card Info

By Michelle Amodio, TMCnet Contributor

It’s been barely a month and Sony is having some serious security issues once again.

Earlier this month, Sony’s network was the victim of the “Anonymous” hacks, which took the PlayStation Network down in a rather dramatic response to some legal issues that were cited as being against free speech. Now, after a 6-day outage for all PSN users, the news of why the outages occurred is something that is a bit difficult to swallow.

It looks like this is a breach of the credit card variety, gamers.

Sony learned that user information had been stolen from its PlayStation Network seven days ago, prompting it to shut down the network. But Sony did not tell the public until Tuesday. In fact, the status update from Sony’s blog on the situation was quite possibly one of the most disturbing to read.

It says:

“Although we are still investigating the details of this incident, we believe that an unauthorized person has obtained the following information that you provided: name, address (city, state, zip), country, email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login, and handle/PSN online ID. It is also possible that your profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may have been obtained. If you have authorized a sub-account for your dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have been obtained.”

Less certain is the status of credit card information, which Sony says may have also been compromised. "While there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken, we cannot rule out the possibility," the company said.

The identity of the hackers is unknown, however many are suspicious of the previous hacker collective, Anonymous.

The group denied official involvement in the take down last week. While they have admitted to participating in previous attacks against Sony, they have created a video message which explains that they are not responsible for the PlayStation Network being offline. They go on to say that the outage does not represent their collective wishes, and that they do not condone the attack. Sony has given some concrete updates as of this morning.

"We have a clear path to have PlayStation Network and Qriocity systems back online, and expect to restore some services within a week," wrote Sony Communications Director Patrick Seybold on the PlayStation blog.
