Tekelec Releases Next Generation Signaling Platform EAGLE XG

MORRISVILLE, N.C. --(Business Wire)--

Tekelec (NASDAQ:TKLC), the network signaling, mobile messaging and performance management company, today announced the EAGLE® XG, a new signaling and session control platform that enables operators to deploy hybrid, next generation networks (NGNs) while leveraging existing technology investments. Tekelec's approach lowers capex and opex while delivering new services and improving network performance.

Subscriber growth, the increase in wireless-enabled devices, and consumer demand for third-party applications on phones is driving operators to support millions of new Internet protocol (IP)-enabled devices. This increase requires larger network databases to manage traffic and routing information. Service providers must also maintain interoperability between new session initiation protocol (SIP) and existing Signaling System 7 (SS7) protocols on their hybrid networks in order to provide uninterrupted service and maximize the value of existing network assets.

The EAGLE XG open hardware platform and applications give service providers a path forward from Tekelec's market share-leading signaling platform, the EAGLE 5, with a cost-effective, scalable migration to IP multimedia subsystem (IMS) or Long Term Evolution (LTE) networks.

"Service providers must meet customers' needs for new services while watching the bottom line, especially in today's economy," said Ron de Lange, executive vice president at Tekelec. "The EAGLE XG is a natural evolution of Tekelec's signaling technology that lets operators manage hybrid networks and expand next generation networks while consolidating and simplifying network architecture."

The platform supports a converged database that enables multiple core network applications, reducing capex and opex by consolidating subscriber and network routing data and eliminating the need to manage, maintain and update databases for each application.

Supports and Routes SIP Traffic

The EAGLE XG SIP Signaling Router (SSR) overcomes the lack of core signaling and session control in softswitch-based NGNs by serving as a SIP proxy, bridging SIP- and SS7-based architectures to gain access to all routing information. The SSR introduces SIP routing directly into the core network, providing scalability and flexibility for hybrid and IP-centric networks. The system creates a centralized session framework that increases service and network flexibility and lays a foundation for cost-effective growth to support the increasing demand for voice over IP (VoIP) and multimedia services.

With a software upgrade, the SSR also serves as a Call Session Control Function (CSCF) to provide SIP signaling and session control for subscribers accessing IMS services. The application, built to 3GPP standards, enables operators to deliver next-generation, multimedia services to any device.

Bridges Intelligent Network (IN) and SIP Technologies

Tekelec's Service Broker enables operators to more quickly deploy existing and new services to their subscribers, reducing time to market and driving new revenues more rapidly. The application will blend IN and next-generation services by providing interaction between SS7 and SIP-based platforms. The result: increased average revenue per user (ARPU) and lower opex while maintaining service continuity across hybrid networks.

Provides Turnkey Home Location Register (HLR) Routing

The EAGLE XG also includes an HLR Router, which optimizes the use of subscriber numbers and number ranges by mapping subscriber numbers to an HLR. The routing optimization solution decreases capex and opex by eliminating operators' need to maintain subscriber number routing tables in every mobile switching center (MSC) and makes it easier to move subscribers from one HLR to another.

The HLR Router is supported by the EAGLE XG converged database, which will support up to one billion subscriber numbers to easily meet the forecasted growth in wireless IP-enabled devices. This large subscriber routing database will also support number portability (NP), E.164 number mapping (ENUM), short message service (SMS) routing, prepaid routing, voicemail routing, subscriber classification, and more.

EAGLE XG Platform

The EAGLE XG platform is comprised of: a carrier-grade, field-proven Linux-based operating system; a middleware layer providing application and operation, administration, maintenance and provisioning (OAM&P) frameworks; and an Advanced Telecommunications Computing Architecture (ATCA) blade server and/or Network Equipment Building Systems (NEBS)-compliant, rack-mounted servers.

The EAGLE XG HLR router has been selected by a Tier 1 operator, and SSR and Service Broker are in multiple Tier 1 operator trials. Applications can be purchased separately or together.

For more information, Tekelec has published an SSR Application Handbook for download to provide operators with a reference guide for using an SSR to solve many next-generation network challenges.
