"A Good Deal Can Avert a Strike": University of Toronto Sessional Lecturers, Writing Instructors, Music ProfessionalsSessional Lecturers, Writing Instructors, Music Professionals and others at the University of Toronto are escalating their call for a good deal ahead of a potential strike. "The cost of living is skyrocketing and yet Unit 3 members are subject to wage restraint legislation," said Amy Conwell, President of CUPE Local 3902. "This is all the more reason for a deal that makes strides on non-monetary issues, like compensation for additional work and job security. We will need to see movement to avert a strike." On Monday, Unit 3 received the No Board Report from the Ministry of Labour, setting the legal strike/lockot deadline for 12:01 a.m. on December 8, 2022. The University of Toronto and CUPE Local 3902, Unit 3 have been in collective bargaining since March 2022, including 18 days at the table, 3 with the assistance of a provincially-appointed conciliation officer. Members of CUPE Local 3902, Unit 3 are dedicated to their students and the U of T community, says the union, yet the University doesn't recognize their service. Instead, they are asked to work without compensation and have to apply year after year for their jobs. "We care about the courses we deliver and the community that relies on them," said Ken McNeilly, a Sessional Lecturer and member of the Bargaining Team.
