ROA Henry J. Reilly Scholarship Recipients Announced

Today the Reserve Officers Association of the United States announced this year's 20 Henry J. Reilly Scholarship recipients, who will each receive $2,500 toward their graduate and undergraduate studies.

"It is a privilege to support the education of the fine scholars selected for this year's Henry J. Reilly Scholarships," said ROA's executive director, Jeffrey Phillips, a retired Army Reserve major general. "These men and women represent the future of an America secured by generations of reservists who served in our nation's military."

Scholarship recipients will attend institutions of higher learning including College of the Holy Cross; Cornell, Eastern Kentucky, Illinois Wesleyan, James Madison, Stanford, Syracuse, Wright State, Xavier, and Yale universities; Virginia Wesleyan College; the universities of California, Michigan, Oklahoma, Southern California, Texas, and Virginia; Georgia Institute of Technology (News - Alert); and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

Reilly Memorial Scholarship Program," wrote one recipient who is a student at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. "With your help, I am able to afford tuition at the college of my dreams, in order to pursue a career in nursing. I am honored and humbled to receive this award, and I truly appreciate your efforts to assist and support military dependents like myself. Thank you!"

"I want to offer my sincerest gratitude to all those who made this award possible," wrote a recipient who will begin undergraduate studies in international affairs at James Madison University in Virginia. "Because of it, my educational goals and plans -- including furthering my Spanish ability and eventually aiding various communities as a civil servant -- are that much more within reach. I am truly honored to be a recipient, and cannot say thank you enough! God bless and Go Dukes :)"

"Once again, thank you for the vote of confidence and the Henry J. Reilly Memorial scholarship. I am committed to my education and to the field of Biology, and one step closer to becoming a physician assistant!"

"Your contributon to my education will allow me to focus more on my studies and career goals," wrote a Yale University graduate student. "After I graduate with my MA in Global Affairs next year, I plan to join the Foreign Service. I want to serve my country and promote prosperity, human rights, and security around the globe. This award will help me achieve these goals and more; I truly appreciate your generosity."

ROA congratulates these exemplary scholars and wishes them success in their studies and the pursuit of their dreams.

Henry J. Reilly Scholarships are awarded for both undergraduate and graduate studies on a competitive basis of academics, leadership and service, and potential for contribution to society. They are funded within the ROA's STARs Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that supports the work of the ROA to enhance the security of the nation by sustaining a strong Reserve force and supporting citizen-warriors and their families who serve our country so faithfully. Scholarship applicants must be members of ROA or direct family members.

Brig. Gen. Henry J. Reilly was ROA's first president; an artillery officer, he commanded an infantry brigade in the 42^nd "Rainbow" Infantry Division in World War I. He helped Gen. John "Black Jack" Pershing found the Reserve Officers Association of the United States in 1922, to support a strong national defense in response to precipitous post-war reductions in the military. After military service, General Reilly was a journalist, historian and lifelong proponent of education.

ROA received its congressional charter in 1950 and is the only national organization with an exclusive focus on support of the nation's uniformed reserve components: the Army Reserve, Navy Reserve, Marine Corps Reserve, Air Force Reserve, Coast Guard Reserve, National Guard, and the reserve components of the U.S. Public Health Service and the National Oceanic (News - Alert) and Atmospheric Administration.
