Minnesota Virtual Academy to Hold Commencement Ceremony


Minnesota Virtual Academy (MNVA), an online public school program of Houston Public Schools, will celebrate the Class of 2018 at an in-person commencement ceremony on Sunday, June 3 in Oakdale.

Of this year's class of 143 students, 30 are graduating with honors. Collectively, the class reports having been accepted to colleges and universities across the region, including: Minneapolis College of Art and Design, Minnesota State University, North Dakota State University, Rochester Community and Technical College, Saint Cloud State University and the University of Minnesota. One student, Christopher Docktor, will graduate with his Associate Degree as well as his high school diploma, and plans to join the Air Force.

MNVA's Class of 2018 boasts three valedictorians: Clara Martinez Zuviria, Savannah Slafter and April Thornberg. Miss. Slafter has received a Presidential Scholarship to attend St. Mary's Universty of Minnesota, where she plans to study elementary education.



"We are so proud of MNVA's Class of 2018 and all they have accomplished," said MNVA Head of School and Houston Public Schools Superintendent Krin Abraham. "It has been an honor to provide them with an online learning platform that meets each of their unique needs, and has set them up for future success."

MNVA students access a robust online curriculum in the core subjects and a host of electives, and attend live virtual classes taught by Minnesota-licensed teachers. MNVA graduates earn their high school diplomas as they explore their interests in a personalized, online learning environment.


Savannah Slafter and fellow-graduate Trinity Pierce will speak at graduation, along with Ms. Abraham and MNVA teacher Kristen Rohloff. Ms. Abraham, as well as graduating seniors will be available for media interviews.
