Orthopaedic Institute for Children to Conduct Free Clinic in Calexico

A team of healthcare professionals from Los Angeles' Orthopaedic Institute for Children (OIC) will be traveling to Calexico, California, later this month to provide free, high-quality care to children from Mexico who have orthopaedic conditions. The visit is part of the Institute's International Children's Program through which more than 150,000 children have been treated over the years free of charge by board-certified physicians and surgeons from OIC.

OIC physicians provide one-day clinics at the Valley Orthopaedic Clinic in Calexico eight times during the year. Clinics are also held on designated dates at the Hospital General de Mexicali. If additional consultation with a physician is required, it is provided at OIC's campus in downtown Los Angeles. Children in need of surgical care receive it at UCLA Medical Center in Santa Monica, where OIC physicians provide the pediatric orthopaedic care for UCLA Health.

Leading the OIC contingent on February 23 will be Rachel Thompson, M.D., associate director of the UCLA/Orthopaedic Institute for Children Center of Cerebral Palsy. Dr. Thompson also serves as an assistant clinical professor in the Department of Orthopaedis at UCLA.

"It is an honor and a privilege to be part of this program and to positively impact the lives of so many children," said Dr. Thompson. "All of us at OIC believe that every child should have the chance to grow well and play well, and these clinics allow us to bring that belief to many children who might not otherwise have access to the knowledge and resources that we can provide."

Among the conditions treated at these clinics are cerebral palsy, scoliosis, congenital hip disorders, hand disorders, missing or deformed bones, and club foot. The clinics and related services are provided free of charge thanks to the generosity of donors to OIC's International Children's Program. Their support covers 100 percent of a child's care - including physician consultations, X-rays, lab tests, CT and MRI scans, surgeries, hospital stay, travel, food, and lodging.
