The Chartis Center for Rural Health Unveils 2018 Top 100 Critical Access Hospitals and Top 100 Rural & Community Hospitals

Today, The Chartis Center for Rural Health announced the 2018 Top 100 Critical Access Hospitals and Top 100 Rural & Community Hospitals. The announcement was held at the National Rural Health Association's (NRHA) annual Rural Health Policy Institute conference.

The Chartis Center for Rural Health's Top 100 Critical Access Hospitals and Top 100 Rural & Community Hospitals are determined using the Hospital Strength INDEX® from iVantage Health Analytics. Now in its eighth year, the INDEX leverages 50 rural-relevant indicators across eight pillars to provide the industry's most comprehensive and objective assessment of rural provider performance.

"Since 2011, the Top 100 Program has become an invaluable lens for rural providers seeking to better understand hospital performance through objective and comprehensive rural-relevant indicators," said Michael Topchik, National Leader of The Chartis Center for Rural Health. "As is the case each year, the Top 100 lists include first-time honorees as well as familiar names. It is an honor to be able to showcase excellence in rural healthcare and help providers identify potential areas for improvement."

This year, there are 19 first-time Critical Access Hospital recipients and 14 first-time Rural & Community Hospital recipients. Additionally, Avera Holy Family Hospital (Estherville, IA) and Redington-Fairview General Hospital (Skowhegan, ME) are the only two hospitals to be recognized as Top 100 Critical Access Hospitals for all eight years.

Since its inception, the INDEX has helped more than 750 rural and Critical Access Hospitals integrate sophisticated analyics for benchmarking performance and has been used by more than two dozen state agencies, state hospital associations, federal grant programs, the NRHA and the National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health.
