President of The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization Issues Statement Applauding Brazil Court Ruling Banning Asbestos

"The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) applauds the November 29 ruling of the Brazil Supreme Federal Court to ban the mining, use, and commercialization of asbestos," said Linda Reinstein, ADAO Co-founder and President/CEO. "This decision sounds a clarion call reaffirming there is no safe or controlled use of asbestos; it will undoubtedly impact asbestos imports and use by at least three companies in the United States -Occidental Chemical Co., Axiall Corp., and Olin Corp. Their imports and use supported Brazil's mining efforts, which enabled them to become the world's third-largest producer of deadly chrysotile asbestos."

"All forms of asbestos cause ancer in humans. Asbestos-related diseases, like mesothelioma, are incurable, but completely preventable. It is reprehensible that this industry continues to put profits over people. For a century, the U.S. has been leading a race to the bottom by allowing the mining, manufacturing, and use of asbestos to continue with impunity. Since 2013, American companies have spent an estimated $4,000,000 purchasing tons of asbestos from Brazil to be used primarily by the Chlor-Alkali Industry. The time is now for Congress to support and pass The Alan Reinstein Ban Asbestos Now Act to end the deadly, man-made disaster. For each life lost, a shattered family is left behind."
