Indiana University Selects Proctoring Platform to Ensure Integrity of Online Assessments

BLOOMINGTON, Ind., Dec. 6, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Indiana University (IU) today announced that after an extensive piloting and review process, it has selected Examity's online proctoring platform to make authentication of online assessments more efficient, convenient, and secure for both students and faculty. Unique among proctoring tools available today, Examity incorporates sophisticated authentication and identity verification tools to meet a wide range of needs and applications for the growing population of IU students who take courses online. Before selecting Examity as its online proctoring partner, IU piloted multiple providers over the course of nearly three years, soliciting feedback from faculty and students to determine which solutions would best meet their needs.

"After five semesters of rigorous pilot projects, we found that Examity's combination of flexibility, security, and support was the best solution for our online learners," said Chris Foley, assistant vice president and director of the Office of Online Education at Indiana University. "Online learning has the potential to dramatically increase access to IU's world-class educational offerings, but it also necessitates a relentless focus on ensuring the quality and interity of assessments and programs. Examity emerged as the clear choice to provide reliable, sophisticated solutions that fit the unique profile of the IU community."

Demand has expanded among higher education institutions for tools and strategies that can ensure the validity and integrity of online assessments, with nearly 6 million U.S. students—more than one-quarter of undergraduates—taking at least one course online. At Indiana University, more than 30 percent of students take at least one online course, and more than 5,000 IU students are enrolled in fully online programs.

To date, Examity is the only online proctoring service to provide a full suite of proctoring options, including live, record-and-review, and fully automated proctoring, as well as mobile authentication, which leverages the ubiquity of mobile devices on campus. Examity's examiDATA platform, released earlier this year, also provides analytics tools to help colleges measure the rate of test-taking violations and benchmark against peer institutions.

"As institutions like IU expand their online programs to reach not just nontraditional learners, but also support the diverse needs of their historic student population, the integrity and security of online courses and assessments are of paramount concern," said Michael London, founder and CEO of Examity. "We look forward to working with the IU team to provide flexible and reliable proctoring services that meet the diverse needs of their students."
