Giving a Tech Gift This Holiday Season? Be Prepared to Be the Tech Help, Especially if You're a Millennial

NASHVILLE, Tenn., Nov. 28, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- If you're giving tech gifts this holiday season, be prepared to spend up to half a day helping your loved ones set them up.

Giving a Tech Gift This Holiday Season? Asurion Study Reveals Most Families Need Help Setting Up Their Tech Gifts.

Unless people get help setting up and learning how to use their tech gifts, they may not use them at all, according to a recent survey sponsored by global tech services leader Asurion1.

Sixty percent of U.S. adults are expected to give the gift of tech this holiday season, and 70 percent say they've helped family members set up or troubleshoot their tech gifts in the past.  For Millennials and Gen Xers, the rate is much higher. Ninety percent of Millennials and 80 percent of Gen Xers say they've had to dedicate time serving as the resident tech support during the holidays. Half spent between an hour to more than four hours helping family with their devices.

Mobile phones, laptops and tablets were items that have needed the most set-up help. However, smart home products like Google Home, smart light bulbs and internet-connected security cameras are becoming increasingly popular gifts, requiring more extensive setup and connection to other devices. Given that a third of respondents have family who don't use their tech because they don't know how, having ccess to expert tech help is more important than ever.

"Remember the days when getting your holiday gifts up and running meant putting in some batteries?  Today it's rarely that simple. Tech gifts can become a burden for people who struggle to set them up, connect them to other devices, and keep them running smoothly," said Barry Vandevier, Asurion President of Operations. "At Asurion, we believe that it should be easy to keep your home, family and personal devices connected and running. Our tech experts are on-hand during the holidays and every day to help with hassle-free tech setup, troubleshooting and tips to help you learn and grow with your new technology."
