This Thanksgiving, Don't Make it a Whine-Fest. Share Ways to Take Action

This Thanksgiving, families across the U.S. will gather together to eat, give thanks, and no doubt, discuss the state of the country. For many, it will devolve into a political whine-fest…regardless of which way each family member voted.

"The amount of family members that will be complaining about something politically-whether or not they voted for Trump-is likely to be off the charts this year," states Genevieve Thiers, NewFounders CEO. "We've moved both from a representational model of leadership to a direct-access, social media-fueled model, and it's thrown everyone off kilter as we readjust."

The guide breaks out the new ecosystem, that has appeared since the last election, into various clearly-identified categories, based on how a user would like to engage. Categories include voting and fighting voter suppression, supporting women candidates, seat strategy, encouraging activists to use their voice, and more. The guide also refers to a tool called ChangeMaker, found at www.fixalltheproblems.com. This tool was created by NewFounders, an ecosystem hub, to make it simple for donors to decipher the new ecosystem with any group in one place with just a few simple clicks.

ChangeMaker users a Kickstarter-like format to easily show activists how to engage with the new political ecosystem based on the problems each group is solving. Organizations begin by adding a project that showcases a problem, solution and timeline. Activists can then either donate to the project OR join the team. When choosing to join the team, activists can specify their skill set such as marketing, data, design, legal, etc. Organizations can activate teams as needed to complete each project, while using the funding coming in to support their work.

Currently, there are over forty-six active projects on ChangeMaker, from groups such as Indivisible IL, ItStartsToday, Tagtag, Democracy Labs, Represent.us, DoSomething.org, Sister District, 5Calls, Higher Heights, OntheBlock, Truman National Security Project and more. The organizations have already raised over forty-one volunteers for their teams and over $5125 towards various activism goals. "It makes everything simpler for me when I try and act," states activist Sally Timson, an IL resident and activist. "I can see all the new organizations in one place and get an immediate "blink" on what each one is working on. Engaging can happen with one click."

So, this Thanksgiving, help your family move past their feelings of helplessness and into direct action. Happy Turkey Day!
