Greg Giddens Receives ACT-IAC Janice K. Mendenhall Spirit of Leadership Award

FAIRFAX, Va., Oct. 31, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Council for Technology and Industry Advisory Council (ACT-IAC) has awarded Greg Giddens, Executive Director of Modernization, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the prestigious Janice K. Mendenhall Spirit of Leadership Award for significant contributions to the federal information technology (IT) community. Giddens was among 8 individuals recognized for their leadership and commitment to public service at the ACT-IAC 2017 Executive Leadership Conference (ELC) in Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia.

Established in 2001, the Janice K. Mendenhall Spirit of Leadership Award commemorates the life of long-time civil servant Janice Mendenhall, an exceptional leader who was known for her dedication to mentoring others and strengthening government and industry relations. The award is the highest tribute ACT-IAC bestows annually.

ACT President Soraya Correa and IAC Chair Mitzi Mead presented Giddens with the award in recognition of his long history of leadership in ACT-IAC and his contributions to government.  Greg Giddens is a career public servant who has dedicated his professional life to creating a more effective and innovative government.  He joined the Dpartment of Veterans Affairs in 2010 as the Executive Director of the Enterprise Program Management Office.  Today, he is the Executive Director of Modernization.  Prior to joining the VA he worked in several other Federal departments, including the Air Force, Coast Guard, Department of Defense and Department of Homeland Security.  His responsibilities have included a number of significant programs such as the DHS Secure Border Initiative.  In every position, he has demonstrated a commitment to public service, selfless leadership, the highest ethical standards, and guiding others through mentorship.  Giddens has also promoted effective and ethical communication between government and industry.  He has worked to achieve that goal as a distinguished member and leader of ACT-IAC.

Correa and Mead also presented the ACT-IAC Leaders Award to Margie Graves (Office of Management and Budget) and Lesley Field (Office of Management and Budget) in recognition of their exceptional leadership and contributions to ACT-IAC and better government.  Ms. Graves and Ms. Fields are developing policies and guidance designed to enhance Federal government mission delivery and improve operational activities while improving the investment of taxpayer dollars.

The ACT-IAC Individual Contributor of the Year Award – Government was presented to Maria Roat (Small Business Administration).  Adelaide O'Brien (IDC Government Insights) received the ACT-IAC Individual Contributor of the Year Award – Industry. Both individuals were recognized for their significant contributions to ACT-IAC over the past year.

The ACT-IAC Rookie of the Year Award was presented to Mike Fischer (BRMi) and Dr. Michael Whitaker (ICF).  This award honors individuals who are relatively new to ACT-IAC and, in a short time, have already demonstrated active involvement across a range of activities in the organization.

The Ginny McCormick New Heights Award recognizes an individual who has made significant contributions as a volunteer – actively working towards a more effective and efficient government.  The 2017 award was presented to Stu Hammer (DXC).
